Public speaking doesn’t have to be filled with worry or angst. Knowing how to prepare and what makes a good speech will help you perform well and enable you to accomplish your goals. Follow these simple tips for delivering your first speech, and you will amaze your coworkers, friends, and even yourself!

Tips for Your First Public Speaking Experience

#1. Realize Your Nervousness is Normal but Also Unfounded

Most of the time, people are reluctant to engage in public speaking because they are afraid. They fear embarrassing themselves, not being good enough or smart enough, or they will somehow fail. Remember this: Most people are nervous about speaking in front of others, so they are more likely to forgive a bit of nervousness from you.

Also, your worst-case scenario is NOT going to happen. You are NOT going to fall off the stage or pass out. The audience is NOT going to laugh at you. And you are NOT going to forget what you want to say.

#2. Focus on Your Message and the Listeners

You are there to tell people something they need or want to hear. Their understanding and enjoyment are the goals. Don’t focus so much on you but instead think about them. Putting your focus on someone other than yourself can help you get over your initial apprehension and concentrate on what matters most…that your audience receives the information they need.

#3. Prepare and Practice

The surest way to succeed is to know what you want to say and be prepared for what might happen. Writing your speech is the only way to hone and craft your message so you are sure it is on point and as clear as possible. Next, practice, practice, practice. Practice your speech in front of the mirror.

#4. Record yourself.

Present your presentation to friends or family members. Practice while the TV is on or music is playing. Practice so much you think you can’t practice anymore, and then you will be ready.

Knowing what you want to say eliminates the worry about forgetting. The more you practice, the tighter your presentation will be. Don’t forget to practice your gestures, facial expressions, and movements, too!

#5. Dress with Confidence

Wearing the rights clothes can help you feel confident and ready, so be sure to select your outfit with care. Choose something comfortable, so you don’t feel stiff or restricted. Pick a color that compliments your coloring. Dress smart, and you will feel smart.

#6. Watch Other Speakers

Find videos online of great speakers and watch what they do. How do they hold themselves? Where do they pause? What do they do with their hands? Learn from masters, and you will feel like you can tackle any audience.

#7. Connect with the Audience

First-time public speakers will feel much more at ease when they know the audience is supporting them and listening. Let the audience know a little about you, so they feel comfortable with your expertise or background.

Share a story or funny joke to put them (and you) at ease. Infuse your personality into your talk so they see how you really are. Use words like “we” and “us” to ensure they know you and they are in this together.

Giving your first public speech can be intimidating, but with a little practice and preparation, you will enjoy your experience. Learning public speaking skills can provide you with confidence and knowledge that can help you in all areas of your life. So, do not freak out when you are asked to give your first talk. Instead, embrace the opportunity!
