Chairs in officeIn today’s modern world, artificial lighting is the norm. It is a rare organization that can use or rely on the natural source of sunlight. It is important, however, to know that light is one of the most powerful sources of creative energy.

Jane Wegscheider Hyman, author of The Light Book, says, “Sunlight not only controls the circadian rhythm that determines your body’s sleep-wake cycle, but it also strongly affects your appetite, mood, ability to heal and productivity. Sunlight plays an important role in your ability to be alert and your capacity for mental and physical tasks.” People living in climates where there is very little light are affected by seasonal affective disorder (SAD), lethargy, and alterations in thinking.

“Studies in artificial-light therapy,” according to Jane Hyman, “have shown that people who were exposed to artificial lighting placed at eye level and were seated 3 feet away from the light for a period of two to six hours experienced a sense of calmness and alertness. They also experienced a surge of energy after 20 minutes. Their moods changed considerably to the point of feeling more sociable, cheerful and energetic.

Consider taking breaks in the sunlight to regenerate energy, creativity and productivity. The right lighting conditions will make a huge difference in the work environment. It will induce more positive behaviors and increase creativity.
