A new pair of shoes seemed to always mean a celebration of some kind: Easter was here; it was time to wind the May Pole; Summer, Back to School, Christmas. All of these events required their own special pair of shoes. Something especially for each particular occasion.
Then when my sister went to work in a shoe store, it seemed like it was regularly my birthday, because she got an employee discount and since I was considerably younger than she was, she frequently bought shoes for me. In fact, I’m sure she thought I was her own real life doll to dress up and she seemed to believe that every outfit needed it’s own pair of shoes. Somehow that belief has remained with me throughout my life.
Shoes tell us so much about a person. If you look at the styles someone chooses you can tell whether they are more interested in appearance or comfort. If you look at how they care for their shoes, it will tell you how they care for other things in their lives such as their cars or their homes. The color of the shoes selected gives us an insight into their personalities.
There was a time when it was considered inappropriate to wear white shoes before Easter or to wear any shoe that was lighter in color than the hemline of one’s skirt or pant.
Today, it doesn’t much matter to me whether or not my shoes even coordinate with my outfit. I just know Cinderella was right when she said, “One shoe makes the difference.” And, a new pair…well, that’s just pure happiness!
