Dear
,
Wow. I wish you could have been with me today! (7/7/07) Right in the front of the Mandalay Bay Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip was the marquee with my book cover in full color and the announcement of my book signing at 2 pm. Just think, it was only Wednesday, three days before, when Kirk Douglas’ name was up there advertising his new book and he was the one appearing at The Reading Room in Mandalay Place. Today it was me! I had always thought that one day my name would be on a marquee on the Las Vegas Strip but I had thought it would be for producing a show of some sort. Instead, it was my book, “You Are More Than Enough: Every Woman’s Guide to Purpose, Passion, and Power” and it was 16 feet tall.
The book signing went very well. When I arrived at the meeting room, they had a table set up in the foyer along with a microphone and chairs for about twenty people. Charlotte, my assistant, decorated the table with beautiful blue cloths and gold stars (my trademark) and the Reading Room had posters at the foot of the escalator between the Casino at Mandalay Bay and the shops at Mandalay Place. I gave about a twenty minute presentation on the book. My voice was giving out on me as I have been ill with a sinus infection and cough for about a week and this was my first time up and about. But the people didn’t seem to mind.
Several people asked some rather intriguing questions which gave me the opportunity to give a short synopsis of each chapter in the book. One lady who attended the book signing at Border’s here in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago, came to this book signing to get a book for her mother. She said her mother had borrowed her book and it looked like the only way she was going to get it back was buy her mother a copy for herself. Debbie Stopka Farris was there. She was a model with Universal Models when I owned it a few years back. She's still modeling and looks just like she did then.
Her mother was with her too, looking just as good as always. Good genes in that family! And Loraine Harper came by. Fiona and I did consulting work for her at the Lady Luck Hotel about 5 years ago.
So many men are buying the book that I sometimes think I should have named it, “You Are More Than Enough: Every Person’s Guide to Purpose, Passion,
and Power”. But I guess it will just have to be a sequel entitled, “Men Are Enough, Too!” And for the ones that show up from the internet dating sight, we’ll have a special edition entitled, “You Are Too Much.”
As usual, Loren Hirsch was there. He’s the representative for this part of the country for Stephens Press, my publisher. It’s so great to have this kind of support. He arrives, checks with the book store owner that everything is in order, delivers bookmarks to be given away, meets and greets people, and generally makes sure that things go well. It’s always nice to look up during a presentation and see his smiling face.
All the while, the book signing was going on, there was another marquee flashing for people using the escalator to have a preview of the events happening at the Mandalay Bay and every few minutes there was my book and my face. They ran this for 24 hours. The people going up and down on the escalator smiled and waved. Many of them stopped to see what was going on. I must admit, it was almost as exciting as looking at the first copy of the book. Almost.
Remember, you are more than enough! You can make your dreams come true.
Top Ten Ways to Make Life Work |
|
As the author of You Are More Than Enough, Every Woman's Guide to Purpose, Passion and Power, I am frequently asked for specifics on how to make our lives work. The answer is ten-fold. The following ten ideas will definitely make anyone's life better!
1. Give Up Blame
Blame shifts the responsibility of our lives and our happiness, making it someone else’s responsibility. Your life is your responsibility and only yours.
2. Stop Making Excuses
Making excuses is another way we shift responsibility. Instead of blaming people, we blame things or circumstances. Remember; where there is a will, there is a way.
3. Learn to live in the present
Instead of being passive, do something about your dream. The present is the only time we have. Start by doing the best you can wherever you are at whatever you are doing. By doing your best, you are taking control of the situation.
4. Become a problem solver
Problem identifiers are a dime a dozen. Anyone can go around pointing out problems. On the other hand, problem solvers are worth their weight in gold. Too few people spend their time and use their minds looking for solutions. Problems give us opportunities to be creative. If you can identify a problem, you can certainly use your creative abilities to come up with a possible solution or two.
5. Make every moment count
Today we do everything fast: talk fast, drive fast, even eat fast. Time is at a premium and most of us are afflicted with “hurry sickness.” There never seems to be enough time to do the things we have to do, much less the things we’d like to do. There are probably times when you feel like a spectator watching your own life unfold, instead of being in control.
Decide right now that you are going to start making every moment of your life count by doing what is important to you with those who are most important in your life.
6. Set your priorities
Decide what is important to you and do the most important things first. Be aware of bad habits that can sabotage your best efforts. Subconscious patterns can make you your own worst enemy. Whether it is trying to remember everything instead of making lists, being consistently late because you wanted to do just one more thing before leaving, or being easily distracted, you can change your habits.
7. Make decisions quickly
Once you have all the available facts, make a decision. Rarely does delay improve the quality of choice. Over-analysis can be seductive and stress producing. Keep in mind that nearly all decisions must be made with imperfect information.
8. Delegate regularly
Whether in a corporate environment or at home, delegate to others. If done right, delegation is a learning experience and a motivator. Actively look for things that others do well and let them do it. Others are often more limited by oudetractionsr inability to delegate than by their own ability to achieve.
9. Control interruptions, time-wasters, and distractions
Interruptions and distractions can be treacherous. Look for patterns in interruptions. Often, they are caused by ineffective systems or a breakdown in a system, process, or function. Low priority items often masquerade as important things because they require your immediate attention. Deal only with the most important and urgent matters and leave the mundane for another person or another time.
10. Take action
Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving.” Action is our only choice. Without it, we become stagnant and like a ship at anchor, we’ll go nowhere. If we are to reach our destination, we must take specific, directed action.
The traditional “summer vacation” season is in full swing. But not everyone will be able to take a vacation this summer. Whether their commitment to the demands of a job or budget constraints keep them from getting away, many people will not use all of their accrued vacation time. Weekends have become just another day to get things done. From shopping and errands to play dates, activities like the children’s sports practices and music lessons, we leave little time in our hectic schedules to relax and regroup. All too often we get caught up in the business of making a living, scheduling the “must do” and running a household. We are stressed, often overwhelmed and heading toward burn-out.
The solution is to take a break. Even if you can’t get out of town or spare a week or two to relax on a cruise or camping in the mountains, you can still get some much needed rest and relaxation.
Most employers will allow you to use your vacation time by taking a three or four day weekend every couple of months instead of requiring that you use your entire allotted time in one unit. A scheduled “just for me” day in the middle of the week can be just what you need to recharge, rejuvenate and face the rest of the rest of your work week.
Even without taking a day off, you can give yourself mini breaks throughout your busy day. Stop and look out the window, take a few deep breaths, stand up and stretch, shake off the tension and get your eyes away from the computer. Instead of eating lunch at your desk or on the way to your next appointment, go to the lunch room. Even a 10 minute break can be a vacation for your mind.
You’ll be more creative and productive, have a better attitude and find even more time for yourself once you remember to take a break!
Mind Workout: Learning Log |
|
What It Is
An effective method for tapping into thinking processes to gain access to experiences, images, ideas, facts and knowledge that are stored in the brain. Very often this knowledge is difficult to access in a conscious state of mind. Visualization can cultivate relaxation in order to allow this stored information to flow into one’s awareness.
How it Works
Choose something to visualize about. It may be a statement of a problem, a work situation, an opportunity for improvement or a process. Create mental pictures of the problem you are trying to solve.
Questions you can ask to stimulate thinking could include the following:
- What change would you like to have?
- What does it look like?
- Who would do what best?
- How would you illustrate or describe a perfect situation?
- Where would the solution come from?
- What could you improve?
Ask your team members to close their eyes and relax by having them imagine themselves in a favorite place. Ask them to let their minds wander and be open and alert to any images or words that come to mind. Allow at least five minutes.
Have them record any ideas that surface even if they are incomplete. Discuss all ideas to see if they produce any other thoughts.
Select the ideas that the team believes to have the most potential for further exploration. If necessary, the team can come back to any of these ideas at a later date.
Option
Ask your participants to stand and to spread out far enough so that when their arms are extended they will touch no one.
Tell them to raise their right arms in front of them and turn their bodies at the waist with their right arms still extended and to go as far around as they can. Have them mark the degree of rotation by finding a fixed point on the wall.
Now ask them to bring their arms back down to their sides. Then ask them to close their eyes and, without physically moving, visualize repeating the exercise in their minds to the point they marked, then to go three inches beyond the first point and find a second point. Finally have them visualize another three inches to a third point.
Now ask them to open their eyes. Guide them through the rotation exercise again. Nearly everyone will go farther than they did the first time.
Have them discuss the power of visualization, the importance of expectations, the effectiveness of focus and the value of goals.
