In This Issue

Dear ,

Much anticipated and long awaited, my book will be arriving in the next few days.  In some ways it seems a lifetime ago that I turned the manuscript over to the publisher.  In others, it feels like yesterday. To all of my friends and supporters, thank you again.  To all of you who pre-ordered, we will begin shipping on or about the 15th of April.

The first book signing is on the calendar for April 12th in North Las Vegas. Although it means a good deal of travel and nights away from home, I am looking forward to seeing many of you again as signings and workshops are scheduled throughout the coming months.  If I’m not scheduled to be in your area, you can help to change that by contacting your local bookstore, women’s organization or community group.  My office will be happy to assist you with available dates and the logistics of getting me to your home town.

Once again, I encourage you to get involved in your community or the greater world community.  Volunteer at a homeless shelter, participate in a “walk” for charity, donate clothing and household items, mentor soccer or little league, adopt a senior to drive to Doctors appointments or the grocery store, give of your time and talents.  Let yourself be a part of creating a better world to live in.  Whether you pick up trash on the roadside, plant trees on Arbor Day or just mow the neighbors lawn, restore beauty to your life.  And while you are giving, don’t forget to give thanks for all you have.

If you don’t have a favorite charity of your own, I will loan you mine. Hospice of the West is not quite there on the purchase of their much needed new van. If you know someone who can help or would like to make a donation, you can contact me for more information.

Feature: Spring Renewal

The seasons have officially changed.  In the northern hemisphere we are entering spring. For weeks now, there have seen signs of the awakening of the earth.  Buds have appeared on trees, green shoots are peeking out of the ground.  Daffodils, narcissus and grape hibiscus are springing up and blossoming in meadows, fields and gardens.

Everywhere we look, we can see leaves and flowers that weren’t there yesterday. The days are longer, lighter and brighter.  We’ve packed away the winter sweaters and pulled out short sleeved shirts, sundresses and sandals.  Gone are the dull grays and browns of winter, replaced by soft blues and brilliant greens.  There’s quickness in our step and a longing to be outdoors. Change is everywhere.

When we look and listen carefully, spring challenges us to be aware of changes that need to take place in our lives. “Spring cleaning” is not just for the closets; it is for the body, mind and soul, as well.  Open the windows and let in some fresh air…not just in your home or office, but also in your mind.

Challenge yourself to get rid of some clutter this month. Give away anything in your closet you haven’t worn in a year.  When you get out your spring and summer clothes, try them on.  If it doesn’t fit or the style isn’t quite right…give it away.  You know you won’t wear it anyway, so why hold on to it. Make room in your closet and your life for something new.  You’ll be doing something for someone else while you’re at it.  There are many people who would love to have the things that are gathering dust in your closet.  Find a shelter or church in your community to support.  You’ll feel doubly good about yourself next time you get into the closet.

Are you holding on to all those paid bills and tax documents from 20 years ago?  Do you have stacks of catalogues from your favorite stores?  Are you keeping them because you might want to order something?  Receipts?  Unless you are going to claim them on your taxes or need to get a reimbursement from your company, is there really a reason to keep them lying around?  Go through your papers, coupons, catalogues and “stuff”. If it isn’t current or immediately useful, get rid of it.

Do you still have the broken lounge chair from two summers ago that’s too good to throw away, but needs repair?  If you haven’t gotten around to repairing it by now, you probably never will.  Give it to someone who will.  Is the treadmill still gathering dust in the garage?  Get it out and commit to using it every day or put an ad in the paper and sell it.  If you’re not using it, seeing it every time you go in the garage only makes you feel guilty and clutters up your thinking as well as the garage!

Open your mind. Let go of some old habits and ideas that are no longer serving you.  Stop holding onto old hurts and beliefs that are holding you back. Let in some clear thinking and fresh ideas.  Take a chance, try something new. It’s spring, after all, the time of renewal and growth. Go for it – remember, you are more than enough to do anything you want to do.

Mind Workout: Opposite Thinking

What it is.
Looking at possibilities by reversing your perspective in two ways:

  1. By thinking in opposites, you’ll discover things you normally miss. For instance what is the opposite of what you’re dealing with? If you are doing more with less, think of doing less with more. If you are dealing with customer service, think of customer disservice. Make a list. Then do the opposite.

  2. Whatever you want to do, think of what everybody else does and then try the opposite. For instance, sending a letter of complaint. Usually everyone writes a letter and mails it to the head office. Instead, make an appointment with the president of the company to voice your complaint. Or, find something positive and send a compliment letter instead of a complaint.

What You’ll Need

  • Flip Chart
  • Markers

How it works
Teach team members how to do a task by exaggerating how NOT to do the task. When presented with a ridiculously bad example, employees can learn both the “how-to’s” and the “how-not-to’s” of the job.

Draw a “T” on a flip chart and write a reverse statement of the problem as your heading on the left-hand side. On the right hand side, write the word “Reverse” as your Heading.

Begin the activity by asking your team members to list as many negative ideas as possible.

When this has been accomplished, address the negative comments one by one by asking your team members how they can reverse the situation.

Encourage your team members to be creative and have fun.

Discuss the ideas and how they can be utilized.
