Africa and Me

Hello ,

The International Women’s Conference held in Johannesburg and sponsored by Zacron and Turning Point International was a huge success.  There were some very impressive women from South Africa and other parts of the world who were incredible speakers.  The subjects ranged from Women’s Rights to Nutrition to How to Be Rich and everything in between.  I was honored to be a featured speaker, but even more honored to meet the women I met, to attend such an interesting program, and to hear such knowledgeable women speak about the future of women in the world.  It was fabulous!  Ronell Botha did an excellent job of coordinating the event and also the two showcases in Johannesburg and Cape Town that Fiona Carmichael and I participated in.

I also presented a program for Marie Pretorius’ Cosmetique 2000 yearly meeting.  It was quite a celebrity audience.  There were TV and radio personalities, salon owners, celebrity stylists and make up artists, dermatologists, and a playwright from London.  Marie had catered an incredible luncheon and introduced the new products in her “African Earth Treasures” line of skin care. I, of course, stayed for a facial as I do every year and now I am the proud owner of the ENTIRE line of skin care products.

And of course, I did a Customer Service program for Robert Forsythe at Misty Hills.  This resort is the ultimate African experience.  Robert has me do a program every year.  He used to be my representative in Africa when he owned Audio Word Seminar Company.  And I remember when he bought this piece of property.  One would have never believed that he would have turned it into such a fine resort with several conference centers. He’s quite the visionary.  I stayed in a wonderful suite with my own outdoor pool, patio with bar-b-q (they call it a braii), and outdoor shower.  There was an indoor shower as well along with a sunken bath tub.  And a tree right in the middle of the bedroom with a tv up on a branch. Then I went to the Spa at Misty Hills and had one of the best massages of my life.  Then Robert gave a dinner in my honor with my name printed on the cover of the menu and my friend, Nico and his wife, drove all the way from the Orange Free State to be there as well as many of my executive friends at Misty Hills.  The food was so good, I would have driven that far just to eat.   Another day, Fiona and I drove out to Robert’s other property, Kedar, where he is enlarging the lodge and building another conference center.  Nico is the architect for this project as well.  Robert took us on a tour of the original Paul Kruger home which he has turned into a museum and then he drove us out into the bush on the 250 acres of Kedar to go game viewing…where we saw giraffe, springbok, zebra, wildebeest, ostrich, waterbuck and many other animals.  The thatch was growing higher than the Landrover in some of the spots we drove through.  It was very exciting.

I went to a healer. “Doctor Irish” That was quite an experience.  He is a trained medical doctor, with a degree in psychiatry, who has studied many of the African healing methods.  It wasn’t like anything I had ever experienced before.  I went there with a pain in my leg so bad that I thought I was going to have to start walking with a cane and after several visits, the pain was completely gone.  He had me set some new goals and write down my five most important values.  Isn’t that interesting that he had me do what I teach?

My friends, Fiona, Carol, Guiduchia, Manuella, and I went to the Durban house for a few days, right on the beach, and I spent one full day in the swimming pool.  Haven’t done that since I was a teenager.  From the veranda, you could hear and see the dolphins as they swam down the coast in the morning and back up at night.  This is my favorite place to be.  In the morning as I woke up, I would lie in bed and watch the sky turn from grey to pink to blue and the sun come up in the horizon.  It looked as though it was a hot air balloon slowly showing itself.  The colors were on fire and the way the clouds were around it, it appeared as though it was layered in color from lightest at the top to darkest at the bottom.  Guiduchia made a prawn curry for dinner one night and another evening we all went out for Mozambique prawns.  I so enjoyed smelling that prawn curry cooking while I curled up in the library and worked on my new book and could hear the waves slapping on the beach below.

I keep forgetting about the plugs over there.  You have to plug your hair dryer and computer into a European plug then into a South African plug and then turn on the wall plug to get it to work.  Made me realize how often I take electric plugs and sockets for granted.  There was a power outage in Cape Town that cost companies billions of rands and inconvenienced the entire population of Cape Town.  Made me realize how often I take electricity for granted.

My friends, Fiona and Carol, threw me a surprise birthday party and invited my South African friends.  It was such a wonderful party and such a special time to be with some of my very best friends in the world.   And what a nice end to a very magical trip!

And now, I’m home.  Since I’ve been home, I’ve spoken at the Las Vegas Writer’s Conference which was a fabulous experience.  Greg Kompas was the coordinator this year and he did an excellent job.  Anyone who is a writer or considering being a writer should really attend this next year.  There were agents, and publishers as well as some very well known authors in attendance.

I’ve been to San Antonio for Kraft Foods and Dallas for Daimler Chrysler and now I’m headed out to Washington, DC and Los Angeles for AARP.  Then some public seminars on Presentation Skills in Phoenix and San Francisco with my good friend, Allison Blankenship, and will finish the month up with a keynote for the Blind Merchant’s Association in Nashville.

Hoping to see you soon in some of my travels!
